Backplate and Wing: Pros, Cons

scuba divers

The backplate and wing are two separable components of a scuba harness. Both are attached to a buoyancy compensationator which creates buoyancy below and above water. Backplate and wing are modular systems, with each component separable from the other. These systems are an excellent choice for divers who aren’t sure what type to buy. Below are the pros and cons for each.

Stainless steel

The stainless steel wings and backplate can be ordered with or without a harness. The backplate and wings are made of 316 stainless steel. It is extremely resistant to saltwater. It is cut with a CNC machine and polished manually to avoid sharp edges that can prematurely wear the strap. They can also work with single- or dual-air tanks. For easier storage, the wings and backplate can be removed from stainless steel.

Stainless Steel backplates are much easier to fit than lead pieces. A Halcyon Dealer can offer weighting advice to help determine what size is best for you. You don't have as many to replace the backplate.

Plastic

Even though the buoyancy of plastic back plate or wing is negative it can still be beneficial for weight replacement. Jacket BCDs have pockets and weight integration. These ancillary options are not available on the backplate and wings. These parts are also available separately. Both are available separately. We'll discuss the pros and con of each. It is crucial that you choose the right type and size of back plate to suit your needs.

Softpack harness

There are many different types of wings and back plate harnesses. Backplates and wing-specific BCDs are the most popular. They contain all the essential components like a harness, backplate and wing. The user can customize the harness by adding a variety of adjustable features. Softpack BCDs can be used by technical divers because they are lightweight and flexible, and don't attach to any rigid plates.

The downside of steel backplate harnesses is their lack of adaptability. The harness is not designed to work with single tanks and is only suitable for double tanks with permanent bands. The steel harness is the most rigid option but is clumsy to use when traveling. The steel harness is only compatible with double tanks. Additionally, the steel backplate may not be suitable for use on land. It can be converted to work with single tanks by attaching adapters, but this is not recommended.
