What's the Difference Between a Wet Suit and a Dry Suit?

fin diving

The most important difference between a suit that is wet and one that is dry is how much water can be allowed to pass through the suit. You will need to consider your preferences and what activities you intend to engage in before deciding on a wetsuit. Ask yourself questions such a how long you are planning to be in the pool, what temperature it is, and what type of body you have.

Dry suits made of Gore-Tex

The fabric is a key difference between GoreTex dry suits and wetsuits. Non-GoreTex dry suit fabrics don't breathe well, aren't as durable and provide less comfort. New dry suit fabrics include waterproof and breathable fabrics. Kokatat, for example, designed a dry suit made of a durable, yet breathable Gore-Tex fabric. Kokatat's suits were the first to be developed and introduced to the market.

Trilaminate dry suits

The basic difference between wet suits and trilaminate dry suits is the material used for the outer shell of each suit. Trilaminate suits can be waterproof, but they don't have insulation and are usually lightweight. They also require a better fitting and are less flexible that trilaminate ones. This article will discuss the differences between trilaminate and wet suits, and give tips for choosing which suits you best.

Hydrus 3L fabric, dry suits

The Kokatat Hydrus 3L updated version is made of a water-resistant, lightweight, three-layer fabric. Its tough nylon outer layer and proprietary polyurethane micro-porous inner coating both move water vapor away from your body, while the soft knit polyester inner layer is comfortable against your skin. This entry-level drysuit also features a tough latex neck, wrist, and ankle gaskets to keep water out.

Suits of IR

A wetsuit is more durable than a drysuit when it comes to keeping you dry. Dry suits not only keep you warm but also prevent water from getting to your body. Dry suits are often equipped with purge valves. Dry suits are used by aircrews for example.
